What Is a Chart Sermon? Believe it or not, there was a time when there were no Power Point® presentations. Preachers went from town to town; holding special meetings -- called gospel meetings or revivals. The sermons were often intensely doctrinal and/or evangelistic. They normally had so many scripture references that some kind of visual aid was needed. How was the preacher to create a visual presentation that he could take from town to town and use with or without power? The answer was the chart sermon. They were painted on bed sheets. This made them easy to transport and display. Some charts were created by the preachers themselves. Many were painted by men who specialized in this art. A preacher could send the artist a list of points and scriptures and the artist would create the chart For an example of "How To" instructions for making chart sermons CLICK HERE Chart sermons are a thing of the past now. They are interesting as a special genre of folk art. But, more importantly they are a good measure of what was being preached in meetings a few decades ago. We envision making this web page a repository of Chart Sermons. Many of them are stored away in attics and basements -- just one down-pour away from being lost forever. If you have any charts that you would like to have posted on this sight, please contact me at for instructions in how to do so. Since March 30, 2007
