Worship Etiquette

We live in an age when more and more people are asking, What's in it for me?" Even in worship. As we mature in our Christian walk, we learn that worship is not about me. It's about glorifying God and encouraging others (1 Corinthians 1:31; Colossians 3:16-17) . When our focus shifts form ourselves to God and others, we begin to look for ways to encourage and build up the people around us. It is Only when our focus shifts to blessing God and those around us that we are blessed by God.

The following list is taken from an article by Ralph Anderson that was published in the bulletin of the Church of Christ in Massillon, Ohio. It has some thoughtful suggestions for how to be a blessing to those around us in worship.

COME. Never miss a worship service unless it is absolutely necessary. Of George Washington it was said: "No company ever kept him away from worship."

COME EARLY. Rushing into the assembly at the last minute is not conducive to worship - yours or other peoples.

BRING THE ENTIRE FAMILY. The worship hour is not a convention to which you may simply send a family delegate.

BE SEATED CLOSE TO THE FRONT. Leave the back seats for late comers and mothers with small children.

BE REVERENT. The meeting house is not a theater or a place of amusement. You have come to worship God and that worship deserves our uttermost attention.

BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS. Don't seat yourself at the end of a pew and make others crawl over you.

PARTICIPATE. Join in the worship. Be sure you sing and be a good listener during the sermon. Don't just sit there as a spectator.

BE THOUGHTFUL OF STRANGERS. They are our special guests. Treat them with the same courtesy as you would if they visited in your home.

CONTRIBUTE GENEROUSLY. God loves a cheerful giver. Freely you have received; freely give. Remember your offering is to God.

LINGER. Never rush for the door after closing prayer as though the building were on fire. Speak to others. Be friendly.
